Frequently asked questions

What is Narrative Therapy and how can it help me?

Narrative Therapy views you as the expert in your own life. It focuses on separating you from the problem—remembering that you are not the problem; the problem is the problem. Together, we explore your strengths, values, and experiences to help you write a new chapter focused on hope and healing.

What happens during my first session?

Your first session is a warm, pressure-free space for us to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what brought you to counselling, what you hope to achieve, and answer any questions you have about how we work together. You share only what you feel comfortable sharing.

How many counselling sessions will I need?

Everyone’s journey is different. Some people find clarity and direction in 4–6 sessions, while others prefer ongoing support. We will regularly review our progress together so you feel in control of your journey.

Can I get WINZ funding to help cover session costs?

Yes! The Lighthouse is a registered WINZ provider. If you qualify for the WINZ Disability Allowance, Work and Income may cover part or all of your counselling fees. We can provide the necessary quotes and forms to help with your application.

What are your session fees?

Our service fees are listed on the service tab at the top of the page.

Is counselling confidential?

Absolutely. Everything we discuss is kept strictly confidential in accordance with the New Zealand Christian Counselling Association (NZCCA) Code of Ethics, with standard exceptions regarding safety, of which we are a member.

Where are sessions held, and do you offer online appointments?

We offer in-person counselling sessions at our Hamilton East office. However, Online (Zoom) sessions are also available for individuals across New Zealand who prefer to connect remotely from the comfort of home.

Do I need a GP referral to book a session

No, you do not need a referral from a doctor or GP. You can self-refer and book directly with us at any time. If you plan to apply for WINZ funding, you will need to contact your local WINZ office to apply. We are more than happy to help you fill out the application form.

What if I feel nervous or don't know where to start?

Feeling anxious or unsure before your first counselling session is completely normal. You don't need to have everything figured out or know exactly what to say before coming in. We go at your pace, and our role is to create a safe, supportive space where you can share as much or as little as you feel ready to.
